Meny-Ultra – Norway’s super supermarkets

Meny-Ultra a division of Norway’s largest food and food-service retailer, NorgesGruppen. Meny-Ultra makes a complete range of grocery products available to consumers in full-scale, supermarket settings under the franchise names Meny, Ultra, Centra and Jacob`s.

The chains, operating earlier in different organizational structures, were brought together under the total marketing concept of Meny-Ultra in 2001. This alliance seemed to agree with suppliers and vendors who, according to a survey conducted by Brandmark Consulting, selected Meny-Ultra as their most valued partner.

Other indications of success in 2005 include:

Annual turnover: NOK 10 billion
Number of stores: 144
Number of employees: 7300

The number of stores continues to grow but of these 144, 96 are owned by NorgesGruppen and accounted for 60% of the overall turnover. The remaining stores are privately owned.

Each chain offers a wide selection of high-quality products, fresh produce, meat and dairy products, a high standard of service, and knowledgeable, well-trained staff. At the same time, however, each has its own marketing profile and customer target-group.

Meny

Meny is the largest of the Meny-Ultra supermarket chains. These stores offer consumers a wide and tempting selection of over 12.000 products, focusing especially on fresh produce and fixed, low prices. Meny aims to satisfy a consumer’s overall needs locally, while simultaneously keeping all the stores at a strategic size.

The concept of Meny is based on a commitment to provide certified, experienced, qualified staff to serve customers, answer questions and create a unique shopping environment. For example, stores in the Meny chain are staffed with experts in fresh produce, meat and fish, bread and bakery items, and so forth.

A survey carried out by AC Nielsen showed Meny as the supermarket chain with the highest share of satisfied customers.

Meny supermarkets are currently located in eastern, southern, and western Norway, but the long-term goal is to have stores in all parts of the country.

The employees – Meny-Ultra’s key to success

The essence of the Meny-Ultra concept is a commitment to high standards of personal service. Whether a customer is entering a Meny or Ultra store, friendly, knowledgeable, accessible staff enhances the shopping experience. Ultimately, far more than the products they find, customers return because of the employees and the atmosphere their positive attitude creates.

Understanding the value of the return on any investment made in its employees, Meny-Ultra offers a variety of trainee and scholarship programs in addition to its own educational program at the “Meny-Ultra school”. This program gives employees and managers a chance to learn more about the varied aspects of their daily work.
